Life comes at you fast

Isn't that what one of the commercial tag lines is right now? I think it is Nationwide Insurance actually. Anyway, I know it has been a while since I've updated my blog, but I won't get as bad as Arnel, promise. ;)

Check out the screenshot. That is an old DOS game I used to love. It is a strategy-based game that plays out similar to the Axis & Allies board game. It is a little more advanced than that, but a lot of the concepts are similar. It is turn-based. Each city has production capabilities that vary. Some cities have specializations that allow them to build a particular unit at an increased rate. There are land, aid and sea units. Terrain actually affects the battle outcomes. I’m playing the game on Microsoft Virtual PC. It was the only way to fool the game into working that I could find. Modern computers are too much for this game, but a simulated computer with 32 MB of RAM and a 2 GB hard drive is more than enough for this game that came on 2 floppy disks. I haven’t done much more than test it and play a few rounds of one of the pre-defined WW2 scenarios. It works and even has sound.

I’m able to play games a little more this semester (and last) because I don’t have homework every single night. I’m in Linear Algebra now. This is all new territory to me and I’m doing OK so far. The real test will come this summer when I try to take Calculus-based Statistics. I’ll need a vacation after that, but all this work moves me closer and closer to gaining that ever elusive paper. I’m proud of my perseverance. It isn’t easy working full-time, taking classes part-time and having a family. Everything else in life has taken a real backseat, including this blog. I’ll try to do better now that I’m back at work (Christmas break was great) and have internet access pretty much every weekday.
