SharePoint

I’m finally starting to understand some of the nuances with Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS 2007). I got a demonstration site setup to show a few people at work. We will be getting some feedback from possible users/editors next week and from the administration. Then I’ll be setting up a new site using the technology. The only caveat is that students don’t have local network logins with which to assign them permissions. That may prove to be problematic since students will be contributors to much of the content areas. Although, I will say the permissions are much better in MOSS 2007 than they were in SharePoint Portal Server 2003 (SPS 2003).

Maybe I’ll get some ideas of how to best handle it when I attend my training in December – Upgrading SPS 2003 to MOSS 2007. The three-day training should prove useful in getting me up to speed in the new version and the conversion process. I get to go to Chicago, IL for the class. That will be cool because I’ve never been there for training. It’s hard to believe all the cities I’ve been to for training and other business over the course of the past decade. I went to Seattle twice, Boston, New Jersey and Richmond for training. I went to Los Angeles and Nashville for conferences. I’m trying to figure out a way to sneak in a business trip to Las Vegas, but that hasn’t materialized yet. Although I am going to try to get in on a trip to Denver, CO in the spring so I can possibly do some skiing. I’m not sure how much of a chance I have for that one.

I like business traveling because I get to try new restaurants on the company dollar. I’ve been to some great places in the past and I’m looking forward to finding some good ones in Chicago too. I also get free high speed internet when I’m at the hotels. When you have dial-up at home like we do, that’s a huge bonus. Unfortunately, I won’t have a rental car this time, so I doubt I’ll do much site seeing. Oh well, I really only have one evening of time that I could even use to do that anyway and I’d rather relax and get settled in the hotel the first night.
